Since 1982 Durgapur Peoples’ Science & Cultural Forum (DPSCF) is working to make people scientifically aware of the need to protect our environment in order to promote healthy social growth. During the last four decades the organization took several cognizable measures in this regard. In a joint venture with organisations like the West Bengal Pollution Control Board, NIT Durgapur (formerly R E College), CMERI, Pollution Control Dept. Alloy Steel Plant, the DPSCF conducted a program to monitor the ambient air quality, level of noise pollution etc. at different parts of this city. ECO Clubs were formed in different schools with the assistance of Environment control Department, Durgapur Steel Plant under the sponsorship of Forest & Environment Ministry, Government of India. The organization also played the key role of district coordinator of National children Science Congress. DPSCF arranged nature-farming in local village Bargoria and in five years’ span several Nature Study Camps were organised for the students. The organization published its journal ‘Basundhara’ for eco awareness and to encourage among common people scientifically rational thought process. It campaigned against the proliferation of nuclear warheads, opposed government’s scheme to install nuclear power plant and a chemical hub in Haripur and Nayachar. It similarly campaigned against superstition, food adulteration, use of plastic carry bags. In keeping with the spirit of its mission DPSCF ceremoniously observes World Environment Day, Aranya Saptaha, Hirosima-Nagasaki Day each year.
Our current mission is to build up a data bank of the flora & fauna of Durgapur.
